How Much Drywall for a Ceiling?
Hanging drywall on a ceiling requires slightly more material and careful planning compared to walls. Because of the gravity load, the spacing of fasteners is tighter, and waste from cutting is typically higher at 15%.
1. Why 4x12 Sheets are Better for Ceilings
Using 12-foot sheets on a ceiling significantly reduces the number of horizontal seams (butt joints). These seams are the hardest to hide with mud and most likely to show shadows under ceiling lights. If your room is 12ft wide, a single 12ft sheet eliminates a seam entirely.
2. Ceiling Screw Spacing Rules
On ceilings, screws should be spaced every 12 inches along the joists if you aren't using adhesive. If you are using drywall adhesive, you can space them every 16 inches. Never use nails for ceiling drywall as they are prone to "pop" or let the sheet sag over time.
